Complex Commercial And Civil Litigators

Environmental Counseling and Litigation

Environmental regulations are complex and the related liability schemes onerous, which together place a premium on effective dealings with regulators and a considered approach to litigation and adversarial proceedings.

Gilbert & Renton partner Jeffrey Renton has 20 years of public and private sector experience in this field.

After working in the office of the General Counsel for the US EPA in Washington, D.C., Mr. Renton returned to Massachusetts to serve as the first General Counsel of the Massachusetts Licensed Site Professional Board, which regulates environmental engineers and professionals in the state. In addition he has more than 15 years of private sector experience in environmental law.

One of our primary areas of focus is litigation involving contamination from oil and hazardous substance under CERCLA and Mass. Gen. L. c. 21E. In addition, we offer counsel and representation at proceedings involving all hazardous waste statutes, including:

  • CERCLA–Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act
  • RCRA-Resource Conservation and Recovery Act
  • TSCA-Toxic Substances Control Act
  • Chapter 21E–of the Massachusetts Oil and Hazardous Material Release Prevention and Response Act
  • MCP–Massachusetts Contingency Plan
  • FIFRA–Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act
  • Clean Water Act
  • Clean Air Act
  • Wetlands Act, Regulations, and Local Bylaws
  • Solid Waste Regulations
